“Yay! 6 weeks of school holidays!” Now while this is something you’ve heard every kid say, have you ever heard a Mum or a Dad screaming it? And no … sarcasm doesn’t count. Parents may love their kids, but school holidays can be a real challenge – not just for the nerves, but on the bank account. So to help out, we’ve put together a range of free school holiday activities that we think both you and your kids will absolutely love.

1. A cardboard box
Every single parent knows the feeling – you’ve just forked out for a super-expensive toy for your young one, only to discover that they play for many more hours with the cardboard box it came in. FAIL!
Well, turn that FAIL into holiday ideas for kids WIN with a trip to the local supermarket. On the shopping list? Some cardboard boxes of different sizes. Then look up all the millions of things your kids can get stuck into thanks to one of the easiest, cheapest and coolest school holiday ideas ever.
2. A park crawl
Mum and Dad, don’t deny it – you’ve definitely been on a pub crawl (or 20). Well, this time, we’re heading out on a sunny day for a brilliant PARK crawl – one of the best free school holiday activities we can possibly imagine.
Get out your Google machine and plot a course to as many local parks as you can tolerate. Pack the picnic rug and lunch and it will be a day your kids won’t forget.
3. Camping
Especially if you already have a tent and some petrol in the tank, a camping adventure can still be counted among the pretty much perfectly FREE holiday activities for kids.
Pick a place off the beaten track and be prepared with some free camping games that will keep the kids entertained around the clock. And if you can’t be bothered going REAL camping, tell the kids that their camping ground is the back yard. They’ll love it just as much.
4. A kid’s list
Long school holidays can be a little like travelling overseas with kids. In other words, it can be very tough on parents.
However, if you plan well, you can make it a whole lot easier. For instance, a great way to get your kids to pack their bags for a trip is to get them to write their own list.
The same logic can apply to free holiday activities. Get your kids to write down a list of the things they REALLY want to do during the break. With a bit of luck, there will be things on there that are free and you don’t actually mind doing. A win all-round!
5. A day tripper
Taking the kids on a long trip might not float your boat – but surely you can manage a day-tripper?
Jumping on public transport may not seem like magic to you, but your kids may not catch a train, ferry or bus that often and will, therefore, love it. Set your destination for free places like museums, libraries and art galleries, or just see where you end up. Your kids will love the adventure either way!
