Clean tile grout is a secret behind a neat tile floor, walls and backsplashes. While tiles resist stains and dirt, since grout is porous, it can easily absorb dirt and get stained. Grout is usually stained by dirt and grime at an entry. Generally, in the kitchen, spills are the most causes of dirty grout while in the bathroom, the soap, mildew, and mould usually give a dirty appearance to it.
But don’t worry, if hiring professional cleaning services is not an option, we have a sure-fire way of cleaning grout in your house regardless of the grout position.
The first treatment is to wipe down dirty tile grout with hot water. This way, you will be able to remove the surface dirt and grime easily. Then, add a cleaning solution to the surface. It is advisable to mix a cleaning solution with vinegar and water, then spray on the grout and allow for five minutes before you will start scrubbing with a soft brush – a toothbrush or small scrub can be used for the scrubbing. For more effective scrubbing, you can use an electric toothbrush. Never use a metal brush because it will scratch the tiles and might remove some pieces of the grout. Be sure to give it a thorough rinsing with hot water when you are through with scrubbing.
For stubborn grout stains, you are free to apply commercially produced grout cleaners or mixed bleach. However, ensure that you dilute it per the producer’s instruction and apply caustic products sparingly as frequent use can erode the tile grout.
Sometimes, you might encounter stubborn stains on the grout. In such a case, combine a paste of two parts baking soda and one part water, then, apply it to the stain. Leave it till morning before you will scrub with a nylon brush. Endeavour to rinse thoroughly with hot water afterwards.
If you are using a marble, which is coarse or porous, apply a less acidic solution since vinegar can spoil the tile. Try a combination of one-part peroxide with two parts baking soda to scrub the grout using a soft brush. Once you know how to clean a stained grout in stone tile, it will save you from damaging your floor.
Also, you can remove the stains from grout by using sandpaper. All you have to do is to fold the sandpaper to work the creased end back and forth on the grout line. The use of a pencil-top eraser is also recommendable, just as you will do with sand-paper. Afterwards, always rinse thoroughly with hot water when you are through.
After cleaning, allow the grout to dry for 24 hours before you will apply silicone-based sealer to resist impending stains and dirt. It is pertinent to reapply the sealer every 24 months or less if the grout is regularly used.
By regularly cleaning your dirty tile grout by yourself, it will not only enhance its appearance but also, extend its lifespan.
